Pitt Football

Seven games into the Paul Chryst Era at Pitt and the Panthers are 3-4. The big win against Virginia Tech does not look as impressive as it did at the time. The Hokies have struggled lately and do not look like a very good football team. The one point loss to Syracuse is the game that may keep the Panthers out of a Bowl game. Looking at the remaining schedule the Panthers are likely to lose to Notre Dame and Rutgers and likely to beat Temple and UConn. That leaves the South Florida game as the game that gets them to 6-6 or 5-7.

Chryst has struggled a bit adjusting to the head coaching job but has done some nice things. Tino Sunseri has been very steady in the passing game and the run game has had its moments. The truth is the offensive line is not very good and has serious depth issues.

Defensively the Panthers have played pretty well after the first two weeks. The glaring weakness is the lack of athletes at the LB position. Also the defensive line is very thin depth wise.

Recruiting has not been very strong but could get a major boost is the Panthers are able to land local stars Dorian Johnson and Robert Foster, both have the Panthers in their final three. Tyler Boyd would be a huge get also, but he looks like he may be headed to West Virginia.

The season has been up and down for Pitt all year. The biggest thing the Panthers need is stability and Coach Chryst needs time. I think both will get what they need and you will see a program take shape and improve each year.
